The Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation is dedicated to providing essential life-saving equipment and training needed by the Hawaii Fire Department here on the Big Island of Hawaii. We feel that meeting this need is something that all of us, as a community, have an obligation to meet.
The Sayre’s gave a check for $80,206 to Chief Daryl Oliveira in 2006. In 2007 the Sayre’s and the Malkin’s donated a total of $90,000 to the Hawaii Fire Department.
Resuce Team that Recovered Danny Which Started the Foundation
In 2008 we received our individual non-profit status. For the previous ten years we were a non-profit Foundation under the umbrella of the Hawaii Community Foundation. Contributions are tax-deductible to the amount allowed by law. The Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation has raised over $400,000 so far for the Hawaii Fire Department (HFD). Including a grant from the Ironman Foundation in 2006. Additionally, the Daniel R. Sayre Foundation has received these 2007 Foundation Gifts.
The Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Foundation is fortunate to have Community Support. We are grateful to our Auction & Golf Donors as well as Sponsors, Financial Donors & Volunteers.
How It Started
The Foundation was started ten years ago by Dr. Frank Sayre and Laura Mallery-Sayre when the Sayre’s lost their son Danny in a hiking accident and experienced first-hand the heroism and perilous nature of the work that the Hawaii Fire Department experiences on a regular basis.
Unfortunately they did not have rappelling ropes long enough to reach the bottom of the valley. So Hawaii Fire Department Personnel took their helicopter down into the Polulu Valley at great personal risk.
The Need
As you are surely aware, we live in an era of cutbacks and budget constraints. Unfortunately the HFD is no exception. The Hawaii Fire Department’s budget can not keep up with the increasing population and the need on the Big Island for new and improved equipment and training. The needs list for 2008 totals $250,589.
Let’s Keep Them Safe
Donate today. Help the Hawaii Fire Department to be more effective, and keep them safer by increasing their life-saving capabilities to help us all when an emergency arises.
Honoring our Heroes
Once a year we acknowledge and celebrate our exceptional Hawaii Fire Department. The Awards Ceremony honors those nominated for Meritorious Service Above and Beyond the Call of Duty.
The Nominees usually say, in their typically humble manner,
that “ they love what they do and are just doing their job”.
What we know is that they are experts in their field and give their hearts and souls to their jobs. The HFD is making a huge difference in peoples lives and the quality of life we enjoy here on the Big Island.
